Lance Carter, 9-time Ironman Triathlete, has been coaching triathletes for over 20 years. After selling his specialty running store, Everyday Athlete, in 2016 Lance went to work at blueseventy where he is now in charge of product design and development for triathlon wetsuits. Lance mentors beginning and intermediate triathletes through his website The New Triathlete and is the author of two books:

Six-Word Lessons for Successful Triathletes: 100 Lessons for Essential Training and Racing

Live Big: Crossing the finish line is just the beginning

In this episode, Karen and Lance discuss Lance’s 80×80 Movement – Milestones & Medals – Challenges for Life:

  • Was there something that happened to inspire you on this journey?
    • The mental benefit of exercise is equal if not greater to taking antidepressents. The mental health part of physical health is enormously beneficial.
  • Milestones and Medals along the way
    • There are life lessons that can be pulled into your every day life as you continue to train and race regularly, such as perserverence, determination, and resilience.
  • What has been your greatest Movement Challenges?
    • You sign up for that first race and all you’re thinking about is getting to the finish line, but then you cross the finish line and you realize you’re not done because there’s more you want to do.
  • What has been one of your most memorable Challenges?
    • It’s just about how can you make a tiny improvement that, in the end, you will feel good about. It doesn’t have to be a complete overhaul. You are just aiming to be a little bit better than you were before.
  • What inspiration do you have for those new to the 80 x 80 Movement?
    • Always have a race on the calendar – something to motivate you intrinsically to get to the next level, whatever that might be for you.
  • What’s your next Challenge for Life?

"It's important to start where you're at, to recognize where you're at. And for a lot of people that can be walking for five minutes. It's important not to get caught up in comparing ourselves to others."
